Deus Ex Machina

Deus Ex Machina

Project overview

This project explores a visual extension of Deus Ex Machina’s world, bringing together surf culture and motorsport through a unified illustration-led identity. Built around a limited palette of black, cream and red, the system combines fluid, surf-derived forms with more mechanical references drawn from motor culture.

Hand-drawn illustration sits at the centre of the identity, introducing texture and variation across applications. Used across apparel graphics and event materials, it creates a consistent visual thread that connects the brand’s global spaces while allowing each to retain its own character.

This project captures the free-spirited energy of Deus Ex Machina by blending
the worlds of surf and motorsport through hand-crafted illustration. Using a focused palette of black, cream and pink, the visuals combine fluid, surf-inspired forms with the raw mechanics of motor culture, creating
a bold and expressive system that feels authentic to the brand’s roots.

The hand-drawn approach reinforces Deus’s built-not-bought ethos, giving
each asset a sense of texture, personality and motion. Across apparel graphics and event materials, the illustration style unifies the diverse character of the brand’s global Temples while preserving the individuality that defines Deus.

Passion Project

Illustration acts as the primary connector across the identity, combining fluid, surf-inspired forms with more structured mechanical references. The linework is deliberately loose and textured, creating a contrast against the more rigid elements of motor culture.

A reduced palette of black, cream and red provides consistency across applications, allowing the illustrations to carry expression while maintaining cohesion across apparel and event graphics.

Across apparel, print and event applications, the identity is used as a flexible graphic layer rather than a fixed system. Illustrations shift in scale and composition depending on context, creating variation while maintaining a consistent visual tone.
